Racing Greyhounds and Osteosarcoma
Greyhounds and Osteosarcoma: A request for data on the incidence of osteosarcoma in retired National Greyhound Association greyhounds
We are seeking data on deceased National Greyhound Association (NGA) greyhounds to determine the contribution to repetitive trauma from racing to the incidence of bone cancer.
This study is racing “agnostic.” There is not meant to be any bias for or against any racing industry. There is no affiliation with the National Greyhound Association or any other group.
This study is intended to include NGA greyhounds only. While we love our Spanish, Irish, English, Australian, and other greyhounds, as well as other sighthound breeds, for the purposes of this study we are seeking data from NGA-registered greyhounds.
To be considered for this study, the greyhound must:
- Have been registered with the National Greyhound Association.
- Be deceased.
- Have a presence on www.greyhound-data.com
We are seeking data on greyhounds that have any number of races, including zero races, to hundreds.
Instructions: If you were the owner of an NGA hound that meets these criteria (NGA-registered with known race name; deceased with a known approximate date of death), please fill out the accompanying (form/web form) for each hound to be included. You may add as many hounds as you wish.
Questions:
- Can my hound be included if they raced outside the United States at any point in time?
- Yes, provided they were registered with the NGA as a racing greyhound, even if they raced outside the United States, they can be included in this study.
- My hound was registered with the NGA, but never raced; are they eligible for this study?
- Yes.
- Are AKC greyhounds eligible for this study?
- Provided the hound was also registered with the NGA, they may be included in this study.
- Is an osteosarcoma diagnosis required for inclusion in this study?
- No. The more data points we collect, the better.
- How far back does this study go?
- There is no limit to the age of the data for inclusion.
